Chapter 18

Mora

“Pumpkin, you’ve got some explaining to do.” My dad was staring at me like I was about to be on trial for murder or something. His eyebrow was raised, and his arms were crossed in front of him, his posture ramrod straight.

It was the same look that had made me spill all my misdeeds from age five, no matter how small.

Dad was a lawyer, and he was really good at his job, which was great for financial stability but not so great when you were a kid in a lawyer household.

However, my upbringing hadn’t been for nothing. I stood straighter, copied the raised eyebrow look, and put my hands on my hips. “I think you mean you have some explaining to do, Dad. Were you ever going to tell me my mother was alive?”

Dad lost his lawyer of the year pose and sighed, running a hand through his hair and looking a hell of a lot older.

At six foot one, he wasn’t the tallest guy on earth, but he had enough inches on me that it made him appear larger than life. It wasn’t just the height difference, either. I’d always linked his lawyer aura with the fact he appeared taller, but how the hell would I know? Dad’s hair was dark, almost black, and it had started to gray over the years. He said I was the one who gave him gray hair, but biology made him a liar. He had a nice tan going, due to all the hours he spent on a tennis court to keep himself fit, but also so he could let off some steam. He’d even tried martial arts for a time, claiming he needed to know how to fight so he could better defend my honor when I started dating, but he hadn’t really enjoyed it as much as he enjoyed hitting the ball with a racket and watching it fly across the court.

I’d never understood what was so much fun about watching a little yellow ball fly here and there over and over, but it sure beat golf, so I wasn’t going to say anything.

“Pumpkin, listen …” He trailed off, clearing his throat and glancing around my room as if looking for answers, but I noticed the way his gaze stayed longer on the spot my mother had disappeared from. “Why don’t we go downstairs? I’ll make us lunch, and we can talk while I cook.”

Oh yeah, Dad could cook too. He honestly was the whole package. Reason number three hundred why I’d never understood why he was still single … until now. Everything made so much more sense now.

“All right, Dad.” I nodded and then gave him a tentative smile. “It’s good to see you, by the way.” Then I rushed him and gave him the kind of hug that had gotten me through a whole life of being a freak.

His arms tightened around me, and he seemed to let go of all the tension on his shoulders. “It’s good to have you home, kiddo.
